About This Project

Hydrospeed

Hydrospeed, also called Riverboarding, is a relatively new sport which only started to appear in Italy at the beginning of the Nineties.
Of all river sports, it is unique as you are totally immersed in the river and in actually become part of the element.

In fact, thanks to the use of the hydrospeed buoyancy device, a pair of flippers, a reinforced wetsuit, helmet and lifejacket, you experience those sensations that only the whitewater of a river concedes, becoming part of the flow.

You alternate being carried by the flow to fighting against the river current, all while taking in the beauty and transparency of the crystalline waters of one of the most spectacular European rivers, a unique feeling that only this sport can deliver.

Prior to each descent, the Guide carries out a dry briefing and a wet briefing to illustrate the descent and safety techniques.

Come and try this “River Experience”!

Equipment provided by the centre

Hydrospeed, 5mm reinforced neoprene wetsuit, 5mm neoprene jacket, helmet, lifejacket, neoprene watershoes, flippers.

What to bring

A wool, fleece or microfibre shirt (those used for skiing are fine), swimming costume, personal items for showering.

All equipment and clothing will get wet during the descent.

Valsesia Descents

The Eddyline School offers three different descent routes: Classic, Expert and through the awe-inspiring Sesia Gorge.

In addition, for those looking for advanced training, such as handling and river rescue techniques, the School offers specific training courses during the week or at the weekend.

The objective of these excursions is not only to ‘learn the ropes’, but also to actively encourage the creation of a team spirit between participants, building socialization under the banner of sports.

From Balmuccia to Vocca.
The main features of this route are the emerald coloured waters that are so transparent you can observe local fish species and the navigation of a series of hair-raising rapids followed by calm pools.

This section is a medium difficulty category with III and IV grade rapids. Their names are Trancia, Slalom, Ubriaco together with other less well-known, but still highly respectable rapids.

A Guide will instruct you how to handle your hydrospeed and will accompany the group during the descent ensuring that everybody has fun and keeps safe.

This descent is suitable for all levels, both for those with previous hydrospeed experience and those who are newcomers to the sport.

This activity is carried out during the whole week, from Monday to Sunday.

Season
from May to July, and based on rainfall in August and September (activity start-up and closure may be influenced by levels of seasonal river depths).

Formula
This is a group activity, formed by a minimum of 2 people.

From Scopetta di Balmuccia.
In this section, the Sesia carves its way through impressive granite cliffs, where the granite riverbed is only a few metres wide forcing the river into a whitewater frenzy.
In this gorge, a renowned natural beauty spot, the current forms extraordinary water features enhanced by the sunlight filtering down into the ravine.

This run is shorter than the Classic descent and is carried out when water levels fall too low in the classic section. In fact, on the Sesia, when the water is deep enough to run the Balmuccia to Vocca section, the Gorge becomes unrunnable due to its conformation.

Put-in is adjacent to an ancient Roman bridge. During the run two portages are foreseen (necessary to circumvent unrunnable or dangerous rapids – getting out of the river, walking downstream and getting back in after the rapid), one of which, about halfway down the run, is extremely eye-catching, where the whole river hurtles through a rock tunnel, less than 2 metres wide and then spouts out as a waterfall.
During the descent, we pause in a small pool to allow participants to leap off a natural rock trampoline.

From Piode to Scopello.
This section is higher up the valley in close proximity to our base. The put-in is slightly downstream from the Piode drop, a stupendous waterfall, which can only be run in kayak.
The main features of this run are the gradient, the continuity and the relatively narrow riverbed. This generates a string of hard rapids and small pools.

A Guide will instruct you how to handle your hydrospeed and will accompany the group during the descent ensuring that everybody has fun and keeps safe.

This descent is suitable for all levels and those with previous hydrospeed experience.
