About This Project

Kayak

Kayaking enables us to visit unimaginable river, sea and lake environments, to physically become part of the landscape.

The kayak, thanks to its great versatility, in comparison to the canoe, can be used in almost any water setting, be that the calm waters of a lake or sea, or the whitewaters of a river or a stormy sea.
Once the basic handling techniques of this watercraft have been mastered, one can decide where to pass leisure time: river, torrent, lake or sea, miles away from the stress of an urban environment.

The Eddyline Kayak School offers a wide range of courses: from classic Kayak handling to Rodeo/Freestyle, Safety and Rescue, Eskimo, Junior to individual lessons and coaching.

The course events, especially the weekly courses, do not only aim to provide technical training and personal advancement, but also actively encourage the creation of a team spirit between participants, building socialization under the banner of outdoor sports activities.

Eddyline’s teaching philosophy, on which all courses are based, focuses on the attention to technical performance, using a ‘Step by step’ approach to attain results, instead of using merely command and repetition, thereby using reasoning through preparatory exercises which lead to the discovery of the stroke.

The courses are structured by level and the students will be admitted to the most suitable level, following a theory/practical test.

The courses of all levels are structured in the same manner: number of lessons, length of lessons, etc., only the technical approach to achieving the desired stroke will vary on the basis of the ability and characteristics of the students.

The levels

  • Entry: suitable for new-comers to the sport or those with minor experience in easy rivers or at sea;
  • Intermediate: suitable for those who complete ‘Entry’ courses or those with significantly more experience on the river;
  • Advanced: suitable for those who have completed other courses or those with experience in medium to difficult river environments;
  • Masterclass: suitable for those with complete technical knowledge such as strokes and paddling, but who want to improve strokes, style, posture, etc.
  • Preparatory Couse and River Guide exam: suitable for those with sufficient experience and technical skills who want to take the course or River Guide exam in excellent physical and technical shape.

The Kayak handling and paddling technique courses are the means to approach this sport for the first time or to continue learning and improving all those essential manoeuvres, enabling the participant to paddle safely and independently.
The objective of the course is to provide all participants with the core knowledge and basic experience and technique, in order to enable them to then decide how to continue their own adventure, whether this be on placid rivers and lakes or on challenging seas and whitewater.
The courses will be structured in homogeneous groups on the basis of the skill level of the participants.

As safety is a fundamental element to be able to enjoy a kayak run, we have focused on this theme, inserting in all 5-day courses, an entire lesson dedicated to safety techniques, rescue and self-rescue.
Based on the “Step by Step” Eddyline coaching system, all courses entail a gradual approach to the challenges, beginning with easy difficulties in proportion to the various course levels.
Each level will include its own “easy situations” and for example the difficulties of Entry Course will differ from those of the II and III levels.
By means of the ‘step by step’ system, based on learning by “discovery/analysis”, each stroke will be broken down and analysed, creating a sort of mosaic which will be gradually reassembled, in order to assimilate the technique.

Safety on the river is the main prerequisite to fully enjoy a kayak run. This idea is an integral part of the Eddyline philosophy and features prominently in all its courses.

Learning to kayak involves not only acquiring the paddling technique to allow a river to be run, but also having the necessary preparation to cope with and resolve any unexpected events that may occur during the outing with our friends.
Making a safe descent of a river does not only mean skipping those sections where the difficulty is higher than our technical ability, or throwing the rope, or attaching a secure line to a harness, it also means that we know how to intervene to rescue a man blocked in the middle of the river or torrent, freeing a jammed kayak, swimming or wading across a river or torrent without being swept away by the current, carrying an injured kayaker, it includes all the above and much more.

Therefore, we have created a specific course where the various techniques of safety, rescue and self-rescue are studied, analysed and put into practice. Course contents will range from preventive and response safety measures normally used during a kayak run, to the more complex rescue techniques used in emergency river rescue.

The course is open to all participants; whether new-comers to sport of kayaking or experts, but is strongly recommended to all those who run medium/high difficulty level rivers or torrents in Kayak.

During the course, we will study and practice techniques that every canoeist group should know and routinely exercise.

The courses are prepared and held by the supervisors of the School; Federico Maggiani and Mauro Maccabelli, both holding SRT1 and SRT2 certification issued by Rescue 3 International, a global leader in river rescue training.

Personal Training is a special kind of teaching/learning involving an intense workload which is targeted, thus shortening the learning curve significantly.
In other words, this is an individual lesson where the instructor monitors the student and structures the lesson on the basis of his or her characteristics.
All levels can attend: both those who are discrete paddlers and want to polish their technique, together with those who are getting to grips with this sport for the first time.
There is no fixed standard or formula for Personal Training, with the exception of our ‘Step by Step’ teaching method. Each student will be monitored and coached individually on the basis of his/her innate aptitude.
We have designed three different Personal Training formulas:
3 hour Personal Training > morning or afternoon > suitable for all levels;
6 hour Personal Training > morning and afternoon > suitable for discrete paddlers;
Long Personal Training > length to be agreed with student > suitable for all levels.
The third option goes beyond the other two; in this case in fact the instructor becomes a true Personal Trainer of the student and monitors him step by step in his technical evolution.

Games and playing are an essential and integral part of the life of every human being, and Freestyle/Rodeo or Playboating as it is also called, is a fun, fast and dynamic aspect of kayaking. It consists of performing various technical manoeuvres and tricks, surfing and getting airborne and originated in the U.S.A.

This course is aimed at everyone: both those who want to approach this entertaining discipline for the first time, and those who already have some knowledge but want to learn new manoeuvres and/or improve their technique.
Therefore it is a course open to novices, but only new-comers to the discipline, not absolute beginners. In fact, to be able to try Freestyle, it is a fundamental prerequisite that kayaking skills have been acquired together with competency in the eskimo roll.

The various Freestyle/Rodeo course configurations all involve alternating river and pool activities, the latter being essential to analyse the athletic action and its improvement from a technical and postural point of view. In addition to practice in water and on dry land, theory lessons will be held on “Hydrodynamics” and “River Hazards” relating to this speciality.

Experienced guides can accompany kayakers on the various runnable sections of the Sesia River and its tributaries, where the ability of the kayaker(s) together with the water levels of the chosen stretch will always be carefully taken into account.

This activity is carried out every day of the week, from Monday to Sunday.

Season
from May to September

Length of trip
varies on the basis of the chosen section and the number of participants.

PRICES
Guided River Run>
40.00 Euro (per person)

Guided River Run + Hire of complete set of equipment> 55.00 Euro (per day)

This activity is aimed at those who want to fine-tune a precise stroke. In this type of lesson, similar to Personal Training, the Instructor focuses on a single student.

The lesson will concentrate on the technique requested by the student, which will be broken down and analysed, creating a sort of mosaic which will be gradually reassembled by means of the Eddyline ‘Step by Step’ method, until the technique is assimilated.

Due to the nature of the contents of this course, it is not suitable for absolute beginners, those with no prior experience in kayak, but can however be attended by those who have already completed a kayak handling and paddling course.
